Destination Expert for Sunny Beach, Bulgaria. Level Contributor. Re: Tobacco Allowance from Bulgaria. Ask a question. We have been asked how Brexit impacts on what cigarettes you can bring back from Europe and other parts of the world?
Nothing has changed as yet even though the UK has officially left the EU. That is because we are now in a transition phase while negotiations are ongoing. So that simply means nothing has changed in terms of cigarette allowances until these negotiations take place. I will start with what I think is the simplest one to understand. You can split this allowance if you want to something like cigarettes and grams of tobacco. If you prefer cigars then you can bring back 50 of those or cigarillos.
Customs in UK airports do watch these flights very carefully when they return to the UK, as people are tempted to bring cigarettes and alcohol back because they are so cheap in the Canary Islands. I have seen so many times people with large hauls of cigarettes having them confiscated and that is a huge waste of money.
It is also worth noting that even if you buy duty free cigarettes on a flight home from the Canary Isalnds, the allowance is still cigarettes etc. With reference to cigarettes the same cigarette allowance applies to any country outside the EU. This is according to the Government website and if you do take more, then they advise that you declare them. If you do not declare them and Customs find those in your luggage they will be seized. If you do declare them you will have to pay Excise Duty and import Vat.
Excise duty is charged at So there goes any notion of cheap cigarettes from the Canary Islands or outside Europe. Now as I mentioned the Canary Islands is easy to understand as the allowance is just so any more and you get hammered. Within Europe is where the rules become very vague indeed. With the advent of Brexit these will probably change again. As yet though nothing has been agreed, and we will of course update this article when that happens. For now though here are the rules. So you head off on your holidays to somewhere like Cyprus and you are wondering how many cigarettes can you bring back?
That is where the information becomes conflicting in nature. If you go into a shop that sells tobacco in Cyprus they state inside the shops that there is "no limit" to the amount of cigarettes you can take back to the UK. I went to Amsterdam and every tobacco shop told me that I was only allowed " cigarettes" to take back to the UK.
This also happened to me in Italy and in Austria. Yet when you check the UK government website you get a different story. So if you buy cigarettes, pack them and carry them in a suitcase, and are going to smoke them when you get home or give them out as gifts to friends or family, and have paid the in country tax keep the receipts then there should be no more duty or tax?
It sounded pretty simple to me until they added this little bit on. And for cigarettes that is , or cigars, or cigarillos or 1 Kg of tobacco. So what this tells me is that they don't want people buying much cheaper cigarettes in Europe and then bringing them back to sell in the UK. I do understand that but when cigarettes are half the price in Europe it is a huge temptation for people to risk doing that.
Now I understand why some of the EU countries say there is no limit because there isn't one and they really don't care either. Cigarette allowance from Bulgaria to UK? Watch this Topic. Browse forums All Browse by destination.
